1:45pm: Femlock update

I finally finished the shirt I was sewing for Femlock. It's not the best, but I've never sewn a shirt before so I'm proud of it. My Watson took a terrible photo of me baking in it

pic under cut because I dont know how large it is on my phoneCollapse )

I still need to fix the collar because it's too big but other than that I'm calling it good enough. I'll try a second attempt after WNW. In the mean time, I'm starting on my suit jacket and I bought "good enough" fabric for my wool coat because the fabric I wanted the store didn't have enough of and wouldn't order more. Blah. Test coat is fine. I'm not going to stress over it. I can always make another one once I find better fabric.

Hope everyone is doing well :)

3:18pm: Men's haircut recs

My fiance has had a hard time finding a good barber shop to get his hair cut at since moving to Portland, so I figured it was time to ask the all might DeePee. Does anyone have any recommendations for barber shops in the Portland area? Preferably SW, near Barbur would be fantastic but not required. We've tried a lot of "salons" but so far the only person who has been competent to cut his thinning, short hair, is a guy who owns a shop conveniently closed on our days off. I'm about to get out the shears, save him!

8:25pm: Beaches!

I'm doing a beachy photoshoot this Sunday and I'm trying to figure out which beach within a 1.5-2 hour drive of Portland is most likely to not be over run with people. I really only know Cannon Beach, and I figure it will probably be busy. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance :)

10:39am: Mississippi Personhood Amendment

Okay, so I don't usually do this, but this is an issue near and dear to me and this is getting very little no attention in the mainstream media.

Mississippi is voting on November 8th on whether to pass Amendment 26, the "Personhood Amendment". This amendment would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status.

Putting aside the contentious issue of abortion, this would effectively outlaw birth control and criminalize women who have miscarriages. This is not a good thing.

Jackson Women's Health Organization is the only place women can get abortions in the entire state, and they are trying to launch a grassroots movement against this amendment. This doesn't just apply to Mississippi, though, as Personhood USA, the group that introduced this amendment, is trying to introduce identical amendments in all 50 states.

What's more, in Mississippi, this amendment is expected to pass. It even has Mississippi Democrats, including the Attorney General, Jim Hood, backing it.

The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute.

So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it.

If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it.

What to do?

- Read up on it. Wake Up, Mississippi is the home of the grassroots effort to fight this amendment. Daily Kos also has a thorough story on it.

- If you can afford it, you can donate at the site's link.

- You can contact the Democratic National Committee to see why more of our representatives aren't speaking out against this.

- Like this Facebook page to help spread awareness.

If any of you have felt like you wanted to give to the Red Cross to aid with disaster relief but just haven't had much money, this is a really great chance to do so. Living Social is having a great deal: $5 for a $10 donation to Red Cross.

8:00pm: Locksmith

Anyone have a good recommendation for a locksmith this hour of the night? My boyfriend and I managed to lock the twisty bottom lock (not the deadbolt) without having a key on us, and the manager of the apartment (doesn't live on site) pretty much said too bad, he won't drive out here to let us in at this hour. Looking for a locksmith that isn't going to cost us an arm and a leg. Thanks in advance.

12:32pm: Dear LJ Friends:
I am doing a clean-up of my LJ friends today. If for some reason I accidentally delete you from my friends list and you cannot see my "CONGRATS YOU'RE AWESOME" post that I'm going to make probably before 4PM PST today, feel free to comment on my "friends only" post and let me know. Chances are I might delete you because I can't remember who you are because you haven't updated in forever, but if you remind me (I'm really awful with remembering things, I apologize) I'll add you back.

The reason for the sudden clean-up?

A friend of mine (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE) and I have become inspired by the Fandom Secret posts and think that it would be fun to post a fandom secret of our own every so often, not anonymously, so that we can learn new things about friends that we didn't know before. If you think this seems like fun, you should definitely join in too =)

If you're unsure of what a fandom secret is, check out fandomsecrets

EDIT: Already finished, if you can't read my "YOU'RE AWESOME" post, it means you were taken off.

I apologize if I mistakenly removed you from my friends. If I did, just let me know in this post and please tell me who you are (besides your lj name) because I might have forgotten. 9:02am: Kumoricon post
To all those attending Kumoricon who haven't pre-registered:

Well, it's too late to pre-register, so that's why I'm posting this. I've heard from some people working the con that, since it's such a small venue and they've had so many people already register, registration might have to close some time during the day on the first day of the con. I'm probably going to try to get in line before 8 that Saturday because of this news. I also e-mailed to find out if I could possibly register people who aren't there if I have their ID and money.

So, yeah, just warning all of you. I'll make a post again once I find out if registering other people is possible, since I know some of you probably don't want to get to the con that early *cough*MICHAEL*cough*.
